課程概述

Linguistics is the scientific study of language. It sets out to answer the questions what language is and how it is represented in the human mind. Linguists focus on describing and explaining language, however, they are not concerned with the prescriptive rules of the language. Linguists try to identify and categorise the elements of all languages and put them into a theoretical framework that describes languages. Furthermore, linguistics is a social science sharing common ground with other social sciences like psychology, anthropology, sociology and even archaeology. It also influences other disciplines such as the research on literature, communication studies and computer science. Linguistics for the most part though can be considered a cognitive science. Along with psychology, philosophy, neurology and computer science, linguistics ultimately aims to discover the functions of the brain and to solve the mystery of language

課程目標
The course aims to introduce basic knowledge of modern linguistic theories and the state of the art in this academic field.
